From yesterday to today, the stories of this once small town have been filled with the courage, dedication, and quiet determination of its citizens, making Lee's Summit an ideal city in which to live and work. On October 28, , William B. Howard founded the Town of Strother by filing a plat containing the 11 blocks that currently encompass the downtown business district.
At the time of incorporation, the population count stood at one hundred people. In November of , the name was changed and the area incorporated as the "Town of Lee's Summit. The "Lee" portion comes from a prominent early settler, Dr. Pleasant Lea. The discrepancy in the spelling of "Lea" was attributed to railroad sign painters. According to history, soldiers drove Younger to a life outside the law after his father's murder and subsequent robbery.
While Union forces were enforcing Order 11, the command issued in ostensibly to burn homes belonging to those with Southern ties, Younger and his brothers were credited with saving some of the original homes within Lee's Summit, the most prominent of which belonged to William B.
Order 11 helped to unify the transplanted southern population in Missouri and compelled Younger to join the Confederate guerrilla band known as Quantrill's Raiders. Cole Younger was arrested after an attempted bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota. Following 25 years of imprisonment for his crimes, Cole Younger was paroled in LS: West West: Yeah, we're so cool.

This same location was also once home to an elementary school, built in The current elementary building was constructed in , and additions were built in and A bond issue funded an addition and renovation at the school.
Also included is a major addition built to resemble the original facility. The original Mason building was constructed in with additions built in , , and A large addition was completed in When Meadow Lane opened in , it was almost completely surrounded by farms.
Since then, this farm land has all turned into residential neighborhoods. A bond issue funded renovation and a major addition to this school. Prairie View Elementary School is the largest elementary school in the district and also one of the largest in the state.
The original Prairie View building opened in and two additions were added in and Both Richardson and Trailridge elementary schools opened second phases in Summit Pointe Elementary School opened in Fall Summit Pointe is located in the southwest corner of the school district. It is located in the southeast portion of the school district and was funded by an April no-tax-increase bond issue. Trailridge Elementary School opened its first phase in and its second phase in A bond issue funded the completion of eight additional classrooms at the new school.
Underwood Elementary School opened in It is named after Dr. William Joseph Underwood, former assistant superintendent. Underwood retired from the school district in and remained active in the community and the schools until his death in
